Our 2026 British works on paper exhibition has three parts. The first is our usual, varied selection of British works on paper (Nos. 1-31 below) with the difference that this year we have decided to extend the date of the works included to the mid-twentieth century. Alongside these, we are proud to be offering for sale fifty works from the study collection of Professor David Bindman (1940-2025) (Nos. 32-… below).

The third part is a set of four drawings of Dachau concentration camp. These were made the day after its liberation by US Forces in April 1945 by the extraordinary WWII SOE operative Brian Stonehouse MBE, who was a survivor of the camp. Click here to see and read more about them.

As ever, Master Drawings Week is accompanied by an impressive programme of talks and events organised by The Drawing Foundation. We encourage anyone visiting the week to attend some of these and join the foundation as a member to support their work

Drawings from the Study Collection of

PROFESSOR DAVID BINDMAN (1940-2025)

David Bindman was a long-time friend of Abbott and Holder; an avid follower of our monthly Lists and always a welcome face on the doorstep. He will, of course, be remembered chiefly as one of the great art historians, and teachers of art history, of his generation; for his work on Blake, Flaxman, Hogarth and many others, and for his work on British art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries more generally. However, as well as a talented academic, I am pleased to say he was also an obsessive collector! It is a great testament to him that he was as much at ease in commercial galleries as he was in universities and museums. This was, no doubt, because he held these very different but overlapping worlds in equal respect. He recognised the value of each in aiding the pursuit of knowledge, but more importantly, in serving his great enjoyment of works of art as objects! In this he was a true member of that particular subset of the art world … the Scholar Collector.

It is fitting that these works will be shown in the US where David had strong ties with many institutions – in particular Yale and Harvard – due to the numerous Fellowships and Visiting Professorships he was awarded. In the UK the works will be on view a stone’s throw from UCL Art History Dept. where he spent much of his professional life … that is, when he wasn’t in the Strang Print Room or the BM Study Room!!
