EDWARD CALVERT

A Collection of Prints

Edward Calvert’s early prints, made between about 1827 and 1831, are recognised as some of the finest and most original productions of the ‘Ancients’, that circle of artists that surrounded Palmer in Shoreham and who idolised Blake. All but unknown in his lifetime, the works were printed in only a small number of proofs for friends and not widely issued until his son published them using the original blocks in his A Memoir of Edward Calvert Artist by His Third Son (1893). The prints were published once more, in 1904 by Carfax Gallery, before the blocks and plates entered the British Museum.

Calvert held Blake’s woodcuts for Dr Thornton’s Pastorals of Virgil to be the paragon of print making. In his own miniature works he pursued a similar intensity and visionary quality. The results, somewhere between the prophetic art of Blake and the mysticism of Palmer, are among the purest visual expressions of the Ancients’ desire for a lost golden age.
