This landscape is typical of the drawings Jan van Goyen made in small sketchbooks while he travelled. This work beautifully describes the distinctive terrain around Haarlem and the water of the Haarlemmer Meer. Van Goyen's great depiction of the Haarlem landscape is the 1646 oil painting in the MET (71.62). David Bindman showed this sheet to William Robinson (1950-2025), his colleague at Harvard, who confirmed the attribution.
