During April and May 1792 Thomas Daniell and his nephew William (1769-1837) visited the hill forts south of Bangalore where Tipu Sultan had recently held out against the British. This well observed, precisely drawn monochromatic sheet is typical of Thomas' Indian work and may well have been produced using a camera obscura. The subject appeared later in the Daniells' famous series of hand-coloured aquatints titled 'Oriental Scenery', although in a far less dramatic composition.
