This early drawing by Moore reflects his interest in non-European sculpture which he had discovered during visits to the British Museum in the mid-1920s. Here, a single sculptural figure is reworked in various degrees of abstraction. The clasped hands resemble those seen in Mesopotamian sculpture. The central design is very close to a sculpture of Moore's of 1931 in the Tate (N06078).
