This large sheet is typical of Nash's watercolours of the 1930s. Although always rooted in place, these works attain to the other-worldly and frequently slip into Surrealism. Nash was fascinated by ancient sites and the idea of history and memory in landscape. His trees are always given a strange human-like quality, as if they are conscious witnesses to the scene.
