Large format works by Varley are a rarity so this must have been made as an exhibition piece. His subject, at first glance a simple genre scene, is surely The Sacred and Profane. In the upper part of the composition rises the spire of a church. Birds fly past it in what seems to be Summer morning air. Below, Varley gives us a charming depiction of the timeless mundanities of human life, here being played out in the yard behind a village Inn.
