Romney, George (1734 – 1802) – Composition Studies for the Liverpool Cartoon.

Romney, George (1734 - 1802)
Composition Studies for the Liverpool Cartoon. Pencil. c.1777. Provenance: Professor David Bindman (1940-2025). 10.75x16 inches.

£4,500

This large sheet is typical of Romney in the impressive, rapid marks and the repetition of his subjects as he tests out different figure groupings. The drawings are likely studies for the sequence of large scale drawings he made after his return from Italy, and which are now known as 'The Liverpool Cartoons' (Walker Art Gallery). The two groups on the left could be studies for 'The Death of Sigismunda', and the two on the right for 'Psyche, Deposited by Zephyr, is Espied by Cupid'.
