‘Sketch of the interior of St Stephens, as it now stands’.
Hand coloured etching. ‘Published March 1st 1802 by H. Humphrey’. Inscribed in an early nineteenth century hand. The British Museum website describes this satire on the inadequacy of the Addington administration as follows … ‘A view of the House of Commons showing only the Ministerial benches immediately beside and behind the Speaker’s Chair, and, on the extreme right, the Speaker and the Clerk with part of the Table. Addington, scarcely caricatured, but wearing gloves, is the principal figure […] in his left is the ‘Treaty of Peace with ye Democratick Powers’; from his pocket issues a paper: ‘List of the new Administration’. On the front bench (left) next Addington’s seat, marked by his hat, sits Hawkesbury, nervous and deprecating, legs crossed, crouching forward, holding his chin. Next him is a very fat man with gouty legs, his head concealed behind Addington, identified as Dickinson. Just behind are Nicholls, clutching his cane, and Tierney (not caricatured), both gazing intently at Addington’s back. Behind Nicholls is Wilberforce, much caricatured.

HOW ‘THE LIST’ WORKS
Our Lists introduce 50-100 works to our large stock of oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints each month.
Most works can be bought online via our ecomm platform, but using this is not mandatory! If you would like to enquire about a work, please email or send a message using the ‘Enquire’ button that appears when you click on an item. We try and treat enquiries about List pictures in strict order of receipt. Given the numerous methods of communications people tend to use nowadays, there will inevitably be times when technological overlaps muddy the system. But we try to be fair!
Please do call if you would prefer to talk to us about anything you see on the website, but we strongly advise sending an email first; we are happy to hold works for a short time while they are being considered, or to give time for you to make a visit.
Images: These are intended as an indication of the work – please telephone or email if you have any questions about the photograph’s relationship to the original. We are always happy to send further photos – frames, versos, inscriptions, something to give scale – so please do ask.
Condition: Please contact us if you would like to know the condition of a work.
Postage: Most works can be packed and posted, inland and abroad. Quotes can be sent.
Mailing List: If you would like to receive Email Alerts when ‘Lists’ of new stock and Exhibitions are published online, please Click Here. (We NEVER share your information – see our Personal Data Policy).
