William Green was a surveyor from Manchester who 'discovered' both painting and the Lake District as a young man. He came to specialise in watercolour views of the Lakes and the surrounding country of which this large-scale exhibition piece is a very good example. Kirby Lonsdale was then a fashionable stop on the way to the Lakes and its Devil's Bridge over the Lune a popular attraction.
