Wilson, Richard (1713 - 1782)
Landscape study. Pencil on prepared paper. c.1760. Provenance: Paul Sandby R.A. (1721-1809), his stamp (L.2112) recto; [...] Professor David Bindman (1940-2025). 9x12 inches.

£4,500

This landscape on prepared paper is typical of Wilson's beautiful draughtsmanship and will be included in a future update of Paul Spencer-Longhurst's 'Richard Wilson Online Catalogue Raisonné'. The drawing belonged to the artist Paul Sandby (Cf. Nos. 23 and 24) who met Wilson after his return from Italy in 1757. Sandby had a huge collection of Wilson's drawings and this sheet bears his recognisable collector's stamp. Sandby's collection is the subject of a recent article by Rosie Razzall in the 'Master Drawings' journal (Volume 63, Number 4, 2025).
