Lazio & Abruzzo, 1826
Original Sketches
with some elucidatory extracts from a Journal
made during a short tour in the ancient
Country of the Volsci, the Ernice & Mountains of the Abruzzi
in the year 1826

Elizabeth Campbell (1783-1861)
This group follows on from the series of watercolours Elizabeth Cambell made in Sicily in 1825, and which we exhibited in 2021. CLICK HERE to view that group.
Since then a lot of information on Elizabeth Campbell has come to light. This is due to research carried out by Morag Cross, whose short articles on Elizabeth Campbell as an archaeologist can be read HERE (for Trowelblazers) and HERE (for Historic Environment Scotland), and Elaine Astill, who has written on Elizabeth Campbell as an Alpinist for the Alpine Journal. Morag and Elaine’s research has further confirmed what an extraordinary woman Elizabeth Campbell was. Most of the watercolours below are sold with a transcription, written by the artist, from the journal she kept on this trip. Read alongside the works, they demonstrate the breadth of Elizabeth Campbell’s interests; from climbing to archaeology and history to botany.
These watercolours all come from an album compiled by Elizabeth Cambell. Consequently they are entirely unfaded. The transcriptions from her journal are illustrated alongside the watercolours, but we have also typed them out for ease of reading; click on each watercolour to read the full entry.
All works are mounted in acid free board. A simple gold, oak or black frame, plus UV glass, can be made for £50+vat.
Postage to UK addresses is £15+vat unframed, and £20+vat framed.
International postage is £40 unframed, and £50 framed.

PAST MATTERS
The Society of Antiquaries, London
We are thrilled to annouce that this Autumn we will be collaborating with the Society of Antiquaries. Having successfully secured a 999 lease on their premises at Burlington House, the Society is now raising funds to help plan the development of their building so that it can adequately serve them and the public in future.
We will be selling a selection of their historical prints at the gallery and hosting an EXCLUSIVE evening at the Antiquaries to view some of their remarkable and rarely seen treasures!
