Flaxman was one of the few British artists of his generation who could lay claim to having true international fame. Most of this came through his illustrations to Homer and Aeschylus, which had an enormous impact on artists in Britain and on the continent. His illustrations to the Iliad were made in Rome, engraved by Piroli and first published in 1793. His illustrations to Aeschylus appeared in 1795 with many editions being printed throughout Europe
