Philip James de Loutherbourg R.A. (1740-1812) engaged Gillray to travel with him to Flanders to make studies for his painting The Battle of Valenciennes in 1793. Gillray made portrait drawings and figure studies (examples of which are in the British Museum). This large sheet, as Richard Godfrey observed in his Tate catalogue, is a compendium of subjects and ... 'thus has something of the character of a visual diary'.
