LIST 555

January 2025

PART I

JULIA MAVROGORDATO (1903-1992)

Surprisingly little is known about Julia Mavrogordato. Of New Zealand / Greek descent, she was born on the Isle of Wight and educated in Oxford, at Headington School then St Hilda’s College. She exhibited with the English Wood-Engraving Society (1926, and 1928-30) and at the Society of Wood-Engravers (1932-34, 1936 and 1938). She also contributed to the British Linocuts exhibition at the Redfern in 1931, and showed at the Beaux Arts Gallery in 1932. In 1935 she married Patrick Playfair (1903-1986). She contributed to the Exhibition of Modern Linocus at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 1939, but there is no records of her exhibiting after this date. She died in Suffolk in 1992.

This information comes from, Timothy Jones, ‘Julia Mavrogordato’, Print Quarterly, Vol. 27, No. 2 (JUNE 2010), pp. 157-160.

HOW ‘THE LIST’ WORKS

Our Lists introduce about 100 works to our large stock of oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints each month.

They are usually published in two halves, in the first and third weeks of the month, but this can vary depending on our Exhibitions and Fairs program.

If you would prefer not to use the platform, do email and we will send an invoice for payment by card or bank transfer.

If you have any questions relating to a work do please email. We are happy to hold pictures for a short time while they are being considered, or to give time to make a vist. We treat enquiries about List pictures in strict order of receipt.

If you would prefer to talk on the phone we are more than happy to do so, but we strongly advise sending an email first so a work can be set aside.

Images: These are intended as an indication of the work – please email  if you have any questions about the photograph’s relationship to the original. We are always happy to send further photos – frames, versos, inscriptions, something to give scale – so please do ask.

Postage: Most works can be packed and posted anywhere in the world. Quotes can be sent.
