This is one of two self-studies by Linnell in David Bindman's collection. The other can be viewed on our website. Both were clearly made in the same session. In this sheet Linnell examines himself with an intense and piercing gaze. In the other he looks to his left, presumably drawing via a mirror. Linnell made numerous self-portraits during his long life. The second of these sheets is squared up, suggesting the works were being made with a self-portrait painting in mind.
