Sandby R.A., Paul (1731 – 1809) – A Scene on the Road to Windsor.

Sandby had a long association with Windsor, not least because of his brother's official roles there (Cf. No.25). This large composition shows figures at a well, with a distant view of the castle in the background. The spire might identify this as the village of Datchet and the inn to the right may be the Royal Stag. Typically, Sandby has given us a scene featuring all walks of life, from the elegant lady riding side-saddle, to the young ostler, the hard-working man working the pump and the maid arriving with her buckets.
