Fuseli visited and re-visited this subject from Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 2 (Act 3, Scene 3) a number of times from the 1770s onwards. The present drawing relates to both his illustration for Chalmer's Shakespeare (Engraved by R.H. Cromek, 1803) and his painting Cardinal Beaufort's Bedchamber (Exhibited R.A. 1808, engraved by Moses Haughton Jr, 1809).
