Gantz was born in India and worked for the East India Company as a draughtsman and surveyor. He lived in Madras (Chennai) and made records of the local landscape and architecture. This is probably one of the 'garden houses' in the Choultry Plain to the south of the city. Sir Herbert Compton arrived in India in 1819, so he didn't live in the house at the time the watercolour was made. However, we know he lived there later and that it was called 'The Chandeleer' due to an inscription on another drawing by Gantz.
