Around 1911 Gwen John moved to the Parisian suburb of Meudon in search of quiet and solitude as her relationship with Rodin cooled. There she returned again and again to small watercolours of worshippers in church. Sitting discreetly toward the back, she noted hat brims, bowed heads, kneeling figures and beautifully captured the stillness of prayer.
