Sandby made views of Windsor Castle and its environs from the 1750s until the turn of the century, testifying to their enduring popularity. This nocturne, with its original frame, is a fine example of the exhibition pieces in bodycolour he was making in the 1760s, some of which were exhibited at the Society of Artists. We know from the inscription verso that it is one of a set of four views owned by Sir William Parsons. This may be the musician who served as Master of the King's Music from 1786.
