Richards, Ceri (1903 – 1971) – The Sculptor in his Studio.

Richards, Ceri (1903 - 1971)
The Sculptor in his Studio. Pen, brush and ink. Signed and dated, 1936. Provenance: Sotheby's 14th November, 2012, Lot 162; Private Collection. 13x20 inches. Framed: 19x26 inches.

£5,750

This drawing belongs to a small group of works depicting an artist in their studio that Richards made in the 1930s. At the time he was an active member of the British Surrealist movement and experimenting with sculpture. The drawings also demonstrate a clear interest in Picasso, but they seem mostly to have derived from his pre-occupation with sculptural practice. One piece dating from this time showing a sculptor at work (Tate T00308) is even made as a relief, blurring the lines between object and subject.
