EXTRACT FROM THE ARTIST'S JOURNAL: "Beautiful as was the approach to Veroli, it was a mere nothing to this extensive and magnificent circuite, which as far as can be relied, an expansive plain rich in every variety of cultivation, from whence Eastern sun shone upon mountains, perched upon whose summits in the most picturesque points were Bauco a large spiritual town, S. Geminiano crowned another summit, and many more. As we descended the hill we came in sight of Veronne, on its wooded knoll, ruins of old castles &c. The whole, aided by the most curiously shaped lines of the mountains recalling the outline of a Poussin landscape, the light being particularly favourable." 11th April
