EXTRACT FROM THE ARTIST'S JOURNAL: We had to climb the Mountain siezed by the Emissary and were most agreeably surprised by the fairness of the view; the Lake of Fucino lay at our feet, the Town of Avezzano in the plain, numerous others upon the opposite Mountains the range encircling the Lake, & bounded by snowy summits. The effect picturesque & than the Alps is certainly finer. The expanse of water is very large said to be twenty six miles, one small island lies on the further side, but there was not a vestige of life upon the calm surface of the waters.
