EXTRACT FROM THE ARTIST'S JOURNAL: On leaving Ferentino we visited the Tomb of Aulius Quintilius at Roman relic, cut in the solid rock, & but little injured by time. Pillared & has the appearance of a monumental erection, but in fact is more properly speaking his will, by which he bequeaths certain lands to the town people for the celebration one day in the year, it being a festival, this is as we were told by our friend Sampaio, held in March in the Dionigia; given a different version of the inscription. It seems this Aulius Quintilius, having been one of the four Decii of Ferentino, & one of the four judges, & made one of the five great Consulars of the age, and a compensation for the desolation into which the town had fallen, & continued for one hundred years because several families from the Trasheverini villages of Rome, & supposed to be transplanted to Ferentino, & assigned them certain portions of his donations, called "Aponianum Roganum Manicianum," &c. brought in the yearly event of one hundred & four pounds of bread & livers & & fine nuts & dried cakes, made to the children, & on his birthday. The memory of some of the lands are lost. The most curious part of this commemorative tablet is expected or suspected in such a position to overlook the beautiful fields which were to correspond to it & standing as it does on the principal slope, watching the fulfilment of that will, long crumbled into dust. The Signor Sampaio at whose house we were lodged, now takes possession of these lands by purchase, but it entails upon him the provisioning for the feast. 14 April.
