EXTRACT FROM THE ARTIST'S JOURNAL: "The sketch is taken from the bed room window of Signr. Bocchetti's House who kindly received & lodged us - The former Citadel, now the Bishop's Palace, no representation on paper can convey an adequate idea of the grandeur & perfection of these walls, still bearing but little appearance of injury from the hand of time. Single stones have measured eighteen feet long by eleven deep and proportionably thick, a square gateway which has been an entrance large enough for any carriage, is formed of three stones, in short - unless seen no fancy can imagine them, said Mr. B. who had travelled over Greece, assured us he had not seen any remains in that country so grand & majestic as in this town of Alatri." 12th April
