Exhibited: Pallant House Gallery, 'The Radev Collection: Bloomsbury and Beyond', Oct 2011 - Jan 2012. 5x7.5 inches. NOTE: THIS PRINT IS NOT FOR SALE.

This print is Sutherland's uncontested masterpiece in etching. The pastoral landscape as descended from Blake and Palmer that evoked a timeless Olde England with man at one with nature, has been abandoned. This is an entirely modern 'Pastoral'. Nature has been bent and shaped in a way that is both threatening and awe-inspiring. It expresses the uncertainty of the future rather than a continuity with the past.
