Dighton, Robert (1752 – 1814) – The Exciseman.

A mezzotint of this watercolour was published by Carrington Bowles in 1792. It is part of a series of single figure caricatures set in an oval that Dighton made. The same character appeared again, in full length and reversed, in an etching Dighton published in 1793. That print is titled 'A Jack in Office' and it has been suggested the sitter is William Jackson, a commissioner for excise.
