Gillray, James (1756 – 1815) – Study for a Satirical Print.

Gillray, James (1756 - 1815)
Study for a Satirical Print. Pencil, brush and monochrome wash. c.1800. Extensively inscribed. Provenance: Professor David Bindman (1940-2025). 7x9 inches.

Sold

Gillray's preliminary drawings for satirical prints rarely appear on the market making this an exciting sheet to handle. We have not been able to identify a related print. The extensive inscriptions are largely illegible, and where they are legible are indecipherable in meaning! None of this prevents the enjoyment of the drawing, which contains all Gillray's great energy and his genius for forging a complex grouping of figures from his sheet with rapid pencilling and dashes of monochrome wash.
