Architectural decoration with caryatid.
Pen, brush and ink. c.1760. Provenance: Professor David Bindman (1940-2025).
11x7.5 inches.
£1,500
Wilton was a sculptor who learnt most of his craft in France and Italy. However, his father was an ornamental plasterer, so sculptural, architectural details would have been familiar to him from childhood. This drawing could have been made as part of a design for one of the monuments for which he is famous, or perhaps for architectural panel decorating a room.
