Thornhill, Sir James (1675 – 1734) – Studies for ‘The House of Commons’.

This drawing is a study for a painting Thornhill made in collaboration with Hogarth, his son-in-law, and which is now at Clandon Park, Surrey. The subject is the House of Commons during the Administration of Sir Robert Walpole and shows the Speaker, Arthur Onslow, calling on Walpole to speak. An engraving was made after the painting identifying the principal people depicted (including Thornhill himself). The seated figure on the right is a study for the Speaker, while the figures on the left and centre are likely studies for Walpole. There is another drawing by Thornhill related to the painting at Yale (YBCA B1975.4.746).
