This large exhibition piece, in excellent original condition, sums up much of what Turner of Oxford was admired for. Beautifully balanced and with great clarity of colour and drawing, his paintings must have seemed incredibly modern. His compositions are seductive conveyors of reality. They do not appear to reduce landscapes to formal types. Of course, they are, in truth, ingenious, theatrical constructions even if topographically correct.
