This is an unusual drawing by Cozens. It demonstrates his interest in compositions other than those that are purely landscape and harks back to his trip to Italy in the 1740s. He has quite vigorously blocked in large areas with graphite, and then used his pen to carefully delineate rocks, foliage, and architectural elements. It is likely he gave the drawing one of his distinctive mounts and signed it later in life.
