Kennington is perhaps best known for his pastel portraits, most notably his 'Arab Portraits', but in the 1920s he also started making pastel life studies. He had begun sculpting in 1920 and these drawings seem to fit in with that growing preoccupation; his figures are rendered in firm contours, big tonal masses, and have a strong sense of weight and anatomical structure.
