In the 1940s, the direct influence Palmer and Blake had on Sutherland in the 1930s developed into a more consciously modern language. His landscapes of this period (often Welsh) are treated in unnaturalistic, acidic colouring. Land forms and plants are given animalistic qualities. Sutherland manages to combine something of the primordial with a sense of the turbulence and anxiety of a modern age, then at War.
