Sketches made on Spring trips to Italy in 1878 and 1880
Tinling was the son of the Rev. Edward Douglas Tinling, Canon of Gloucester and an Inspector of Schools. After Winchester and Christ Church, Oxford (MA 1872) he spent a year in the office of architect Sir Gilbert Scott before, inspired by the Oxford Movement, joining the Church. He was appointed vicar of the newly built St Clement’s Church, Holdenhurst (Springbourne), Bournemouth (1871-1879). The chancel gates were commissioned in memory of him and his curate, R. G. Scurfield. He died at Pau in the Pyrenees 13th December 1880.
