Smith (Circle of), John 'Warwick' (1749 - 1831)
Standing Stones; a Sublime (Welsh?) Landscape. Pencil and watercolour. c.1790. Ex. Collection: John Pearce Higgins; L. G. Duke (D3629); Stanhope Shelton. 8x6 inches.

Duke believed this to be one of a group of drawings incorrectly attributed to Towne that were acquired by Yvonne Ffrench in East Anglia before 1960. John Pearce Higgins attributed the work to John White Abbott, but Duke felt it is by John 'Warwick' Smith. It is certainly very close to Smith - possibly even by him - although the vigorous pencil work in the foreground is not his usual manner.
