PAIR: Banditti and Pilgrims. Pen and ink. Versions of the pair of roundels exhibited by Mortimer at the Society of Artists in 1773 (no. 208) or 1774 (nos. 175 and 176) and engraved by Joseph Hayes in 1780. One of the prototype drawings to which these relate appeared at Christie's (14th July 1987, lot 14). The present drawings were either made by Mortimer himself as versions of a popular design, or by someone who had access to the original drawings. Literature: see J.
