McBey, James (1883 - 1959)
'April in Kent' (Sandwich). Etching. 1912. Signed and numbered 'XX'. Signed and titled in the plate 'Sandwich / Good Friday 1912'. 6x11.25 inches.

'In the Spring of the year 1912, McBey, who at this time knew little of English Scenery, made a short stay at Sandwich. A postcard, written to me in haste, says: "What stuff is here! Surely centuries of etchers have fashioned this land! I cannot make up my mind where to begin" ... His plates of the Sandwich Set are a song of Spring, telling of the season when April blends to May in soft and sunshiny days troubled only for fleeting moments by the shadow of a cloud or by slanting rain'. (Extract from Martin Hardie, 'Etchings and Dry Points from 1902 to 1924 by James McBey', 1925, p.xii).
