This character study was made in Flanders while Gillray was assisting Philip James de Loutherbourg R.A. (1740-1812) in making preparatory sketches for his painting 'Earl Howe's Victory...' (1795). Gillray had already assisted de Loutherbourg in making sketches for his 'The Siege of Valenciennes' (1794). Other examples of these drawings are in the British Museum.
