Daniell R.A., William (1769 - 1837)
A warship before the wind in a light breeze. Probably a 4th-rate naval two-decker of about 54 guns. Pencil and watercolour. Signed and dated, 1794. Ex. Collection: Cyril Fry. 5.25x4.5 inches.

Despite the lack of a naval pennant, the relatively low freeboard, the apparent presence of a full upper-deck tier of guns and the lack of a raised 'coach' poop suggest this is probably a 4th-rate naval two-decker of about 54 guns rather than one of the East Indiamen with which Daniell's travels made him familiar - Daniell returned to London in 1794. We are grateful to Pieter van der Merwe for his help in cataloguing this drawing.
