Campbell, Elizabeth (1783 - 1861)
Italy, 'Isld of Capree [Capri] - 26th Apr 1825' (sic). Watercolour. Inscribed and dated, 1825. Provenance: An album of watercolours by Elizabeth Campbell. 4.5x7.5 inches.

“We sailed on board the King Ferdinand Steam Packet from Messina in Sicily the 28th of April 1825. The sirrocco wind had prevailed two days and all was enveloped in thickness and mist, beyond what I had ever before seen, and discouraging to those who were travelling for scenery. It allowed us to see but little of the coast of Sorrento, but cleared a little as we passed Capri, which assumed a various and beautiful appearance, as did the Syren rocks, in which we observed some curious apertures thro’ which the light appeared.”
