Portrait of Catherine Hyde (1701-1777), Duchess of Queensberry.
Oil on panel. Early 1770s. One of four known versions, the prototype in all likelihood being the 1771 pastel by Hugh Douglas Hamilton (See Neil Jeffares, J.375.182). This painting is almost certainly by the same hand as the version reproduced in Violet Biddulph, 'Kitty, Duchess of Queensbury', London, 1935.

Daughter of Henry Hyde, 3rd Earl of Clarendon and wife of Charles, 3rd Duke of Queensberry, Catherine was one of the great female personalities of her age. Noted for her beauty and eccentricity, she was patroness of Gay, and friend of Pope, Swift, Prior and others.
