POWELL & Sons (Whitefriars)

Presentation Watercolours

The Whitefriars Glasshouse was founded in the early 18th Century and bought by entrepreneur James Powell in 1834. His three sons established a stained glass department in 1844 and with assistance of Charles Winston (1814-1864) created glass that was as close as possible in texture and colour to medieval stained glass. The quality of their techniques attracted artists of the calibre of Edward Burne-Jones (between 1857-1861), Henry Holiday and Walter Crane. A Christian Society, World Fairs and an aggressive marketing department meant few churches, institutional buildings and indeed houses across the British Empire and North America escaped a Powell window. The memorialisation of WWI, for which many of these Presentation Watercolours were painted, led to a burst of activity in the 1920s. Powell and Sons continued to make stained glass until 1973.

These works are sold unmounted and unframed.
