OLIVER HILL F.R.I.B.A. (1887-1968)

THE PASSING SEASONS
or
LEARNING TO PAINT

11th April – 4th May

Chelsea Square, 1930.

These landscapes were made by the architect Oliver Hill in the 1940s. They were inherited by the present owner from Hill’s wife, Titania, in a folder inscribed ‘The Passing Seasons or Learning to Paint’!

Hill was first and foremost an architect, but his practice extended to landscape architecture, interior design, garden design, exhibition design, photography and writing. So, the taking up of landscape painting in his 60s was entirely in keeping with his nature.

Woodhouse Copse, 1926.

His ability to understand and move successfully between disciplines and styles was key to his professional success. He made Arts and Crafts and Georgian Revival buildings in the 1920s (Lutyens was a family friend and early influence). He turned to Modernism in the 1930s, when he also made wonderful designs for exhibitions such as the British Pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Modern Life, 1937. Hill returned to ‘traditionalism’ in the late 1930s.

Midland Hotel, Morcambe, 1933.

Hill’s ambidextrous abilities as a designer frustrated the understanding and appreciation of his work for some time. But Alan Powers’ monograph to accompany the 1989 exhibition of Hill’s work at the RIBA brilliantly demonstrates that his variety should be celebrated. Powers’ book is titled, ‘Oliver Hill – Architect and Lover of Life’. It was in the outdoors that Hill most loved of life. These works are made in that spirit.
