MONICA POOLE R.E. S.W.E. (1921-2003)

Wood-engravings from a Private Collection

Monica Poole was the pre-eminent wood-engraver of her generation; a worthy heir to the tradition established by the artists of the Print Revival. The greatest influence on her work was John Farleigh, under whom she studied at the Central Schools and about whom she wrote a book in 1985. Although Poole exhibited her work regularly she was shy and retiring and her output relatively small. Her prints then, always highly prized by collectors for their quality, have an added air of preciousness. It is rare to see such a large group of her works as this.
