GWEN RAVERAT S.W.E. (1885-1957)
COLOURED PRINTS 1938-1949
Raverat was making coloured prints in the late 1930s – see ‘Winter Morning’ (1938) below, or her ground-breaking illustrations to The Bird Talisman (1939) – but, she began making them in earnest from 1946. Influenced in part by the work of Lucien Pissarro and by Japanese wood-cuts, her shift to colour, and a larger scale, was also a reaction to waning interest in the small, black and white prints that defined the ‘print revival’ of the inter-war years. Like her earlier work, these coloured prints are a masterly display of technique and design.
