This Group continues our Series of East End Exhibitions. Rendell came to the East End, as many did, out of necessity; she studied at St Martin’s during the War, but despite the support of influential painters like Henry Lamb and Vivien Pitchforth, found she had to take a teaching post to support herself. She taught at Harry Gosling School in Whitechapel during he ’50s and ’60s, establishing herself in Mile End Place in the ’70s, and becoming in every way part of the fabric of the East End. The Gentle Author’s wonderful account of painting in the East End – East End Vernacular – was quite literally going to press the week her work was ‘re-discovered’, and so the opportunity for her to be included there was missed. She enjoyed the overwhelming reponse to her work on the Spitalfields Life blog, but died soon after. This Group then, all from her Estate, and the first solo show of her work, is a fitting continuation to the Spitalfields Life articles, the East End Vernacular publication, and our Exhibition of last year.
