BOROUGH JOHNSON

Topographical Drawings

Ernest Borough Johnson (1866–1949) trained at the Slade under Alphonse Legros and at Hubert von Herkomer’s school at Bushey. Primarily a painter in oils and watercolours, he was also a talented printmaker and draughtsman; The Art of the Pencil and The Technique of Pencil Drawing are two of his books on the subject. As these supremely accomplished drawings show, he was a committed artist-traveller and his works are perhaps best appreciated as exemplars of that grand tradition.
