EXTRACT FROM THE ARTIST'S JOURNAL: "The path to the Cavern being nearly perpendicular we left our steeds at the care of the numerous troops of inhabitants who had thronged out to follow us & climbed the ascent on whose scanty herbage were grazing a few goats. The entrance was crowded by old women & men preparing torches, much raptured in viewing this very magnificent & certainly natural scene." 11 April
